Breen-64, Hodder 1-A variety, considered to be Rarity-6.

An exceptional totally original example of this large and impressive denomination, with rich coin-gray color, delicate blue and golden toning and much luster in the fields and protected areas on both the obverse and reverse.

This specimen is also unusually well struck in the centers, with the bust of Cecil Calvert in particular about as sharp and well defined as seen on any of this issue.

When offered as part of the James A. Stack Collection in 1989, this coin was described as “Possibly the Finest Known” of this issue.  We can see no reason to doubt that contention.

Ex Stack’s November 1989 sale of the James A. Stack Collection, lot #4; earlier purchased from Wayte Raymond in the 1940’s.
