WillowTree6p WillowTree6pr

Noe 1-A variety, considered to be R-6+.

Our own census data traces just 15 different examples of this entire denomination, all struck from this single die pair.

And this is a magnificent piece, certainly among the finest known Willow Tree Sixpences (or any Willow Tree coin of any denomination or variety).

Wonderful eye-appeal, with a lovely silvery-gray patina, a pleasing nearly round planchet and, most importantly, a boldly defined tree.

That the piece has survived to this day in very choice uncirculated condition is nothing short of remarkable.

One could knit-pick and wish for all that this piece has to offer plus a full, bold date, but to do so is rather pointless in our view – as, to the best of our knowledge, such a coin doesn’t exist.

Ex Stack’s October 2005 sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XII, lot #10; earlier the collection of F.C.C. Boyd; earlier the Noe plate coin; earlier the collection of Carl Wurtzbach and the Wurtzbach plate coin; earlier Spink & Sons 1935 sale of the W.S. Lincoln Collection, etc., etc.
