1787 New York Excelsior
Eagle Left Type
F15 [PCGS Edge View]
Breen-980, W-5785 variety, Eagle Facing Left. High Rarity-5 according to our own proprietary census data.
An extremely popular type in the colonial series and a very challenging issue, with a significant proportion of the surviving specimens verdigrised, corroded, impaired, damaged or some unholy combination of the above (including some pieces which have unfortunately found their way into straight-graded holders).
But we never buy those, instead waiting patiently for the infrequent opportunity to acquire one of the few survivors with choice color and hard, smooth, original surfaces - like the present example.
And this wholesome, problem-free medium brown piece might well be the most affordable, original Excelsior extant.
Ex Stack's-Bowers March 2015 sale of the Henry P. Kendall Foundation Collection, lot #2509 where it realized $23,500; earlier ex Stack's November 1974 sale of the Donald Groves Collection, lot #334; earlier Lester Merkin.
