Breen-1137, W-5680 variety, considered to be Rarity-4+ as a type, but almost never seen in this condition.

One of the really interesting pieces in the colonial series, with the obverse legend IMMUNIS (Latin for “free from tribute or tax”) COLUMBIA (the land of Columbus, i.e. America), which can thus be interpreted asĀ  “America free from tribute”.

This type was once considered to be a pattern for federal coinage, but clearly this is an issue which must have seen circulation given the number of survivors extant with considerable wear.

But this choice unc. is about as nice as this type can be found, all original, with rich chocolate brown color and very sharp detail as can be seen in our cropped PCGS True View images.

Ex Stack’s May 2004 sale of the Ford Collection, Part II, lot #291.
