Sheldon-2, with AMERICA in the legend, a wide date and no periods. Considered to be Rarity-4 and as such the rarest of the Chain Cent varieties.

And this is a wonderful coin, and a quintessential example for type.

Lovely light chocolate brown with exceptional original surfaces and absolutely choice for the assigned grade. In fact, the S-2 variety is characterized by a soft strike at the ear, and an argument can be made that this piece is actually AU for the variety.

There are a couple of very light edge bumps at 1 o’clock on the obverse and 10 o’clock on the reverse, as often seen on this type, though in this case they are really minor and noted only for accuracy. We could also point out a darker swath of toning in the central reverse and a few very small marks in the fields, but that is it on this otherwise problem free piece.

In all, this is a virtually unimprovable XF example of this type which can be best appreciated when compared to the typical Chain Cents that appear on the market from time to time – including those in higher grade holders of either of the two major services.

Not inexpensive, but we challenge the reader to locate another comparably attractive example (if one can be found at all) at anywhere near our price.
