Bass-Dannreuther-1 die variety, considered to be Rarity-4.
The mintage of this date was a scant 3,035 (just $7,587.50 worth of quarter eagles were made in 1802 for the entire USA!). And this is a very choice example of a date of which the finest example in the Smithsonian is just an AU58.
All original too, lustrous, with pretty coppery toning.
There are a few remnants of adjustment marks visible in the denticles on the obverse rim, but they are as made and do not intrude into any part of the design.
In all, this piece is very solid for the grade and among the finer coins of this type one is likely to see.
