Hodder 1-A, W-1080 variety.  One of perhaps 40 to 50 known in all grades combined, of which not more than 3 or 4 survive in this incredible state of preservation or finer.

And of those highest graded pieces, just a couple exhibit the originality seen here.  Indeed, this is about as original and untouched as a 17th century silver coin comes, with rich coin-gray color and some ancient golden toning in the devices described thusly in its 1988 appearance in Stack’s Herbert M. Oechsner auction:

Uncirculated. Really an extraordinary specimen. Nicely centered and struck, the bust particularly so, with every strand of the hair clear and sharp.

While PCGS has not graded this at quite such a lofty level, the only one we’ve seen distinctly finer is the James A. Stack specimen last offered at Heritage in January of 2008 (also as a PCGS AU58) which realized $126,500 in spirited bidding.

But this one is less.

Ex Heritage’s January 2015 sale of the Donald G. Partrick Collection, lot #5625; earlier Stack’s September 1988 sale of the Herbert Oechsner Collection, as noted, lot #949; earlier Mayflower Coin Co.’s April, 1957 auction.

Note that this coin has been verified by CAC.

$49,750
