Vlack 5-D variety, Small Letters type. Considered to be Rarity-5.
With hard surfaces, rich brown color, a delicate golden splasher and about as much detail as one will ever see on this type.
This is the finest graded example of this issue at either service, and certainly among the finest known anywhere. Indeed, in 150 years of auction catalogs and reference books, we can find evidence of just two (2) St. Patrick Halfpennies that could be considered finer than this, one of which was the Garret coin which was last offered for sale in a February 2005 Numismatist ad for $215,000 (!).
But this one is less expensive.
Ex Stack’s January 2005 sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part VII, lot 17; earlier purchased from A.H. Baldwin & Son in May, 1974.
$30,000
