A superb example of this date and mint from the Stanley Elrod Collection – recognized by specialists in this field as the finest complete set of Charlotte gold coins ever assembled.

And this surely must have been a highlight of that set.

In Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth’s new masterwork, Encyclopedia of US Gold Coins 1795 to 1933, the authors state the following:

"In the mid-1980’s author Jeff Garrett purchased a small group of 5 very choice 1852-C half eagles from Silvertowne Rare Coins. The coins graded MS-63 to MS-64. Most of the high grade coins in the population reports today are those examples. The numbers have been inflated by resubmissions. Most of these coins have been off the market for years, and just one example has traded at auction in the last decade."

Messrs. Garrett and Guth also note that there is but one 1852-C in the National Numismatic Collection housed at the Smithsonian, and they considered it to be AU58.

Based on that information, we think it can safely be said that this piece ranks among the finest of this date.

The strike is a bit soft in the centers, which is not unusual for this issue, but the coin is spectacularly original, the color is lovely and the surfaces are very choice and prooflike, with die polishing lines clearly in evidence in our photo (and as seen on all high grade survivors).

In all, an exceptional piece worthy of the finest collection.
