Gad.339, Br.309 variety, struck at the Lyons mint. Stack’s cataloger Michael Hodder highlighted this issue as a Rare Date and Mint when describing the lone 1724-D (a scruffy XF) in the Ford collection.

But this one ain’t no XF. It’s a superb unc. which has to rank among the finest known of this entire series.

Most examples of this type were recovered from the Le Chameau shipwreck off the coast of Nova Scotia, with the heretofore best known of those – including multiple dates and mints – offered in the aforementioned Ford sale.

This piece dramatically exceeds every one of Ford’s and clearly never spent time under water.

Brilliant and flashy, with exceptional cartwheel luster and the look and technical quality of a gem.

In fact, we’re not sure what exactly kept this coin from a 65 holder – the few marks seen are some raised die polishing lines, thin die cracks, a subtle die clash and a light planchet streak in the central reverse, all as made.
