Well, where do we start? I guess by saying that this piece is esoteric even by esoteric standards.

This coin began life as a 1796 Dutch Ducaton.

The reverse was then smoothed and artfully re-engraved in Dutch which loosely translates as follows:

Number 1137, On November 1st 1796, Drawn by LJ, An American, Premium (or prize) of 30,000 guilders.

The precise identity of LJ is not known, but the fact that he was an American and received a ‘premium’ (perhaps a payment from a lottery of some sort) was of sufficient local import to memorialize in this way.

Engraved European pieces of this era with distinct American relevance are unusual and highly collectible.

And this piece is lovely, with original silver surfaces and attractive peripheral toning, housed in a handsome silver beaded frame of what appears to be late 18th century manufacture.

Neat! And significant. And certainly the first like it we have ever seen or offered.
