Betts-607 variety, struck in silver. 34.2 millimeters.
Do you remember in the John Adams HBO miniseries, when Adams (brilliantly played by Paul Giammati, who was also very good in ‘Sideways’) was dispatched to the Netherlands in order to convince the Dutch to support the fledgling colonies? If you do, you will also know that he was rebuffed by the Dutch leaders, who were more concerned about their commercial interests, and then fell ill, with fever and hallucinations.
But in 1782, the Dutch did acknowledge the American colonies, and this scarce and artfully rendered Betts medal duly commemorates it.
And this example is especially choice, with just the most trivial of marks, totally original surfaces (unlike many of these) and rich, original, blue-gray toning.
