Middlesex-Spence’s, D&H-829A variety, Plain Edge.
One of the extremely popular macabre tokens depicting Thomas Paine, reviled in England during this period for his anti-monarchial views, hanging from a gibbet.
The reverse depicts Pandoras Breeches aflame, with a decapitated serpent (with Paine’s head) beneath.
The token itself is pleasing medium brown with some subdued luster on both the obverse and reverse.
