April 21, 2008: "You Da’ Man!"

Concept:
The legend on this medal (which incidentally is on the reverse; a cool portrait of a young, clean-shaven Lincoln adorns the obverse) seemed so strange that we had to do an ad about it.

And dealer Rich Uhrich came up with the winning idea, which was to draw the parallel between ‘Thou Art the Man!" and the phrase you always hear spectators shout on televised golf tournaments: "You Da’ Man!" (plus this is Masters week, so a golf theme seemed appropriate).

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
But we didn’t start with that idea. The first draft was "Because You Da’ Man didn’t sound sufficiently Presidential." and we really liked it, but just felt the golf concept was the way to go.

The first effort in that direction was “It would certainly make golf telecasts sound more refined.”, but decided a lot of people wouldn’t understand that or make the obtuse connection.

Which of course caused us to go way too far in the other direction with the literal "It’s a tribute to President Lincoln, and a precursor to spectator shouts at golf tournaments 140 years later." which seemed like an awful lot of words.

So we settled on the one we eventually ran, and we’ll hope that CW readers will ‘get’ it.
