July 28, 2008: "Really, Really"

Concept:
We wanted to do a gigantic ‘buy’ ad, but really, really didn’t want it to sound like everyone else’s “WE”RE BUYING” or “HIGHEST PRICES PAID” ads that we see in CW all the time.

Most of those sound a little too much like late night TV promos for discount furniture for our tastes, so we opted for a more understated approach featuring a lot of cool coins we’ve handled through the years – arranged sort of like the Eliasberg catalog cover – as an indicator of what we are looking for.

As an aside, do you have any idea how long it takes to artfully arrange a group of coins like this?

About three days – though admittedly a lot of that was spent resizing them, since all of our coin images on the website are the same size regardless of denomination. In this case, that wouldn’t do, so we had to re-size them using the diameters listed in Breen, fix the largest coin as the baseline and shrink all the others accordingly. To say nothing of arranging them by size, color and coin type for best effect.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
We had lots of clever ideas, including some wild ones suggested by customers, but decided that, in this case, we’d be best served by saying what we meant, directly, without risking losing the message in a too-creative caption.
