November 23, 2009: "Under / Over"

Concept:
Our featured coin this week is an over-date error that certainly has not been over-publicized by the numismatic press. In fact, most people – even some serious collectors – have probably never seen one before.

Which is why we thought it made good ad fodder. Especially when coupled with the very appropriate ‘under / over’ caption written by our guest author, concisely telling the story of this coin.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
The alternatives we considered were general (as opposed to being specific to the coin shown), including "Some that glitters IS gold", a twist of the oft-repeated Shakespeare quote "All that glitters is not gold".

Interestingly (to me anyway), the actual Shakespeare quote is "All that glisters (with an ‘S’) is not gold", using a bizarre-sounding and now obsolete middle English word which I would have wanted to use even though it would have looked like an extremely bad typo if it appeared in our ad.

I can’t help it – I like stuff like that, because if everyone is calling you to tell you that you are an idiot who can’t spell, at least you know they’re reading your ad.

Fortunately, we never got to that point, since this week’s final caption was just waaaay better.
