This is a coin your author chased for years, starting at a 2001 Goldberg sale I attended during a layover at LAX on my way to Australia, got outbid in a bizarre scenario where I was sure I won and then had the coin unceremoniously yanked out from under me, then completed my short stay by carefully tearing out the 20 pages of the catalog I wanted to keep for research so that I would not have to haul an entire phone book-sized tome on my ongoing flight, but then proceeded to accidentally throw out those 20 pages and somehow put the remaining massive portion I did not want into my briefcase and schlepped it all the way to Melbourne. Aaah yes, those were fun times.

But not as much fun as finally acquiring this coin a few weeks ago, since it is an extraordinary über-gem, early die state example which has been the sole finest graded example at PCGS for decades now, with razor sharp detail, all but pristine surfaces and superior eye appeal.
