An important early American medal with a distinctive portrait on the obverse, and the reverse legend WITH COURAGE AND FIDELITY HE DEFENDED THE RIGHTS OF A FREE PEOPLE DIED DEC:14.1799 AGED 68.

This piece was struck from the 1st reverse die as indicated by the presence of the dot beneath 68 on the reverse, and is many times rarer than examples struck from the 2nd die.

A very rare and desirable medal, and this is a fantastic example with brilliant golden surfaces and superior eye appeal.
