Musante GW-267, Snowden-127, Baker-Unlisted, struck in Copper. Believed to be Rarity-8.

An extremely rare and seldom seen issue with a portrait of Washington on the obverse, and an intimidating coiled snake above DON’T TREAD ON ME on the reverse.

We know of just three examples of this type: One in the Smithsonian, one in the American Numismatic Society and the present offering. The only auction record we can find is in W. Elliot Woodward’s October, 1860 Auction, lot #1217.

This is apparently the only example in private hands, so if you are a Washingtonia specialist this might just be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
