Baker-17, W-10650 variety, estimated by us to to be Rarity-6, and as such a rare and underrated issue in the popular Washington Series.
And this is a fantastic example, one of the two finest known to us (the other being the Norweb specimen), both graded AU58 by PCGS.
In the 1981 Garrett sale, noted Washington expert George Fuld described this piece as follows:
"it is about as nice as any known to me. I have never seen a fully Uncirculated specimen."
Nor have we or PCGS in the subsequent years.
Lovely and totally original chocolate brown with a hint of mint red lingering in the devices, the only red we have ever observed on any example of this type.
Ex Heritage’s January 2007 sale, lot #750, where it realized $25,300; earlier Bowers and Ruddy Galleries’ March 1981 sale of the Garrett Collection, as noted, Part IV, lot #1708.
$27,500
