Newman 12-M, W-6800 variety, STATES UNITED type.  Considered to be Rarity-3.

A lovely, original example traced to Stack’s-Bowers 2013 sale of the Ted Craige estate where it was described as follows:

A high grade example of Newman 12-M, which is pretty easy to find in lower grades but very rare in EF. Glossy and even light olive brown with the look of a higher grade. The planchet is wholesome and unflawed. This piece is sharper than the AU-53 (PCGS) Retz example that Mr. Retz considered second finest known behind a single Unc; it brought $3,738 in our November 2012 sale. Some of the addition sharpness this piece enjoys may come from its very early unclashed state, a state so elusive that long-time student Retz didn’t even know about it. A lower grade example is plated in the 2008 Newman work to show this rare state; another double struck high grade piece is plated in the error section of the 2008 Newman work (#70461). This piece stands as one of the finest known examples of the die state and the die variety. A piece of great importance to specialists.

And the specialists apparently agreed, as this piece realized $4,700 that day in spirited bidding.  But we are pleased to offer it here for less.

Ex Stack’s-Bowers January 2013 sale of the Ted Craige Collection as noted, Part III, lot #11590.
