June 14, 2010: "A Dollar was a Daalder"

Concept:
We made the decision to place this almost uncirculated 16th century Dutch trade coin in its proper historical context. But not in a boring way.

Instead, our guest-author opted for a mix of alliteration and clever word play to indicate that this cool, old, dollar-sized issue actually circulated in colonial era New York, and thus suggested that an example of this type has a rightful place in any collection of early American coins, or in a set of (very, very) early silver Dollars.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
The first eleven iterations of this ad featured an excruciating pun on the word lion, like this, for example: "We’re not lion when we say that this coin circulated in colonial era New York."

Which then gave way to this not-quite-as-bad-but-almost version which at least was very succinct: "Lionize your collection."

But in the end, we felt that long or short puns were not really furthering the cause here, and the New York story really needed to be told.

So we told it.
