Concept:
While this 1791 Washington 1¢ is a lovely Choice AU example housed in an old PCGS slab, the backstory is what makes this piece especially interesting. In that it was a proposed pattern for a circulating US coin which was ultimately rejected by George Washington as “too monarchial”.

But if he had not rejected it, it would have taken the place of the Chain Cent and changed numismatics f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Also, these would be waaaaay more expensive.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
We almost went with “Rejected by Washington as Too Monarchial.“, but decided that might be confusing to people who did not know the whole story. So we went with the Chain Cent angle instead.
