May 21, 2012: "Au Inspiring"

Concept:
When confronted with this superb 1840 $5 in lovely, original, choice AU, we of course decided to do something with AU (as in ‘About Uncirculated’) and Au (the chemical symbol for gold on the periodic table, an abbreviation for the Latin ‘Aurum’).

Such as to pull an Awe inspiring / Au inspiring ‘switcheroo’ in which the caption could rightly apply to both the coin, and the grade.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
We started with the guest author contribution "Golden Delicious.", an apple name inspired caption which charmingly highlighted the lovely original color on this piece in a way that my dear departed Grandmother Helen would have liked immensely (since she regularly used the word ‘delicious’ to describe non-food items).

Unfortunately for her, we decided this was a bit too generic for this week’s coin. It also might have been unfortunate for us, since that caption might have been a better selection than the one in our final ad.

Oh well. Sorry Grandma.
