January 21, 2008: "Gilt-y Pleasure"

Concept:
We felt that this coin needed a little extra explanation of what it is, and so we wanted to somehow incorporate that into the caption without being too literal or pedestrian.

And even though the end result included a bad pun (which we try hard to avoid), we thought it was reasonably elegant and pretty effective.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
There were a few, all variations on this same theme:

"The ultimate gilt-y pleasure." just wasn’t enough, so we decided to add some qualifiers.

“At a fraction of the price of the regular issue, this R-7+ pattern might be the ultimate gilt-y pleasure." seemed like too much information and resulted in a long caption with no ‘zing’. So that was out too.

So we settled for the eventual winner which was sort of in-between these two.
