May 23, 2011: "H_NGM_N TOK_N"

Concept:
We figured the child’s game of hangman was ideally suited to create an interesting caption for a token featuring an actual hanging man (like this red and brown unc. Conder, for example).

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
We knew we were going with the hangman idea, though in doing so, we figured we needed to make the caption itself so clear and obvious that readers of CW would be able to figure out what it said even with some of the letters missing.

So we started with “V E R Y C O O L T O K E N.”, then removed the vowels, leaving “V R Y C L T K N.”, but that created a caption so cryptic that it was unclear even to the person who wrote it (i.e. me).

So we simplified that to “H A N G M A N T O K E N.”, then removed the ‘A’s and the ‘E’, leaving “H N G M N T O K N.”, which still seemed reasonably understandable (and totally appropriate) to us.
