November 29, 2010: "Gem Proof Colonial"

Concept:
This week we decided that that it would be fun to feature a colonial coin in utterly ridiculous gem proof condition.

And while this piece is actually an 1860’s era restrike, it is typically collected with the Washington colonial series and has been included in that section of the Redbook for years.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
Though we knew we were going to go with this basic concept, we did fiddle with the wording a bit, starting with:

"How many stunningly beautiful gem proof colonial coins to do you own?".

But we decided that sounded a little over the top, and that the extra embellishment wasn’t really necessary.

Especially since our photo clearly spoke for itself in this case, illustrating (very accurately in our view) a coin with much mint red remaining, deep, clear mirrors and much more cameo contrast than one typically encounters on this type.
