January 10, 2011: "Lost and Found"

Concept:
Our guest author came up with an idea which we believe cleverly (and, importantly, succinctly) highlights the most important attribute of the featured item.

Namely that it was once lost (in the unfortunate wreck of the S.S. Republic off the coast of Georgia in October of 1865), and then found (in 2003 by Odyssey Marine Exploration, Inc.).

A cool story which in our view makes this much more than just a coin, but instead an important historical artifact of the sort that should be offered in a lavish gift box.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
For some reason our initial ideas all included references to salt (i.e. the saltwater under which this piece was submerged for almost a century and a half), including:

"Choice, historic and served with salt."

But that is just not nearly as good as the one C. Sloan came up with. So we used his.
