March 1, 2010: "Made from Recycled Materials"

Concept:
So recently Dave was reading a book about the early history of the mint and found it surprising that there was no gold being mined in the early United States during that period – at least no gold ore that made its way to the mint in Philadelphia.

Which struck us as an interesting story that we don’t remember anyone else telling (at least not in a cheeky CW ad): the fledgling US mint was forced to melt gold jewelry and foreign gold coins in order to make planchets and strike coins of their own.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
We had a few, but all of them were of the ‘generic’ variety, meaning they could have been applied to any ad featuring any gold coin being sold by most any coin dealer. And of course we really hate to use captions like that.

So we didn’t.
