August 15, 2011: "Monumental Continental"

Concept:
Conveniently, one of the few words that rhymes (well, sort of) with Continental is actually one that aptly describes this lovely, original example of a truly monumental colonial era issue.

Also, this caption was short and sweet, and we like ’em like that.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
Our first efforts focused on this piece being one of the ‘100 Greatest U.S. Coins’ (as selected by the authors of the book of the same name), but we couldn’t think of anything to do with that other than to just state it in an extremely literal and not very exciting way. And while we sometimes use serious (i.e. boring) captions, we did not want to do that this week.

So we then shifted gears and turned to the official CRO Rhyming Dictionary, where we discovered a number of words which rhymed with Continental. Unfortunately, most (like ‘Dental’) were unhelpful. Eventually, though, we came across ‘Monumental’, which was a no-brainer.

So we used it.
