July 12, 2010: "New and Curious"

Concept:
We try to alternate our typically off-beat CRO ads with serious ones that place the featured coin in its proper and, we believe, interesting, historical context.

Of course, when we can combine the two ideas, and come up with an off-beat historical ad, we jump on it, such as this week’s effort which features the oddly-worded-but-100%-accurate quote from the 1785 New Jersey Gazette (which, incidentally, proves that Bar Coppers were circulating in New York in that year).

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
One of our readers suggested "CRO-Bar.", which we felt was clever, though leaning away from numismatic sophistication and toward abject silliness.

And our next best option in this case was the frankly uncompetitive "The nicest AU Bar Copper we’ve seen, bar none.", as it was one small word-play away from the "Gem AU!!!!!!" hyperbolic school of coin descriptions.

And we think there are already more than enough of those in CoinWorld and Numismatic News.
