June 7, 2010: "Or You Could Try"

Concept:
We’ve always been intrigued by numismatic issues where a mint state example is rarer and significantly more expensive than a proof specimen (even if the proof is a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y stunning, like this one), yet we had never found a way to work this idea into an ad.

Plus it occurred to us that we’ve never before run an ad featuring any coin in this series, and were thus waaaaaaay overdue.

So we came up with this concept and figured we’d kill two birds with one well-placed stone.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
The original version of this ad read:

"Or you could buy an MS66 version for 10 times the price."

But we thought that some readers might interpret that to mean that we actually had an MS66 example in inventory too, would immediately call us and attempt to order it, would be extremely disappointed when Dave explained that no, we didn’t have one, and would then start yelling like crazy.

And, of course, any ad that could potentially lead to such drama is not the sort of ad we want to be running.

So we went with the modified version to your left.
