Concept:
In our view, the most striking feature of this medal is the incredible depth of the design which makes it appear that you can (almost) step right inside.

Which our guest author not-totally-directly implied with his winning ‘shoe’ caption.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
We had several possible directions here, including one which highlighted the fact that this piece was designed by US Mint Engraver Anthony C. Paquet of 1861 ‘Paquet Reverse’ Double Eagle fame. Which we thought could be cleverly highlighted with the caption "Paquet’s other reverse."

Ultimately, though, we decided that the visual drama here made for a better, more memorable ad.

So we went with the final caption to your left.
