August 1, 2022: "The Maris Plate Coin"

Concept:
Through the years we have occasionally taken a one week hiatus from our typically ridiculous captions to instead use a weighty, serious caption to highlight a significant coin.

And among New Jersey Copper collectors, nothing can be more significant than a Maris plate coin (i.e. a NJ coin that was actually shown on the photographic plate illustrating each of the known die varieties in the The Coins of New Jersey written by Dr. Edward Maris in 1881.

One such coin is the lovely, original, chocolate brown and quite scarce Maris 42-c featured in this week’s ad. And while there are other examples of this variety out there, and a few are quite nice, only one – this one – can lay claim to being the actual Maris plate coin.
