September 22, 2008: "Would You be Surprised?"

Concept:
We like these sorts of ads where the caption actually says something interesting about the coin that many people may not know. And so when they are flipping through CoinWorld, and they see it, we hope the reader will pause, think about it, and, possibly, endeavor to learn more about the coin pictured and find out why the date on the coin is not the year it was made.

And why is that? The 1652 date on the coins reflected the date of the act authorizing the minting of coins, it did not indicate the year of minting.

Also of note (to us), this ad features the reverse of a coin, which we don’t do often but which is a nice change of pace every once in a while.

Captions that didn’t make the cut:
We knew we were going to use this concept, but our first iteration included a caption which was not in the form of a question: "Many people are surprised to learn that these coins were actually minted in the 1660s."

But that didn’t seemed as inspired, so we didn’t use it.
