M. 1.1-A.1, W-1252 variety, GEORGIVS /VTILE DVLCI type.  Proof, Struck in Copper.  Considered to be Rarity-8 with just 2 known in this composition.

One of the rarest coins not just in the Rosa Americana series, but in all of colonial numismatics.

This is one of just five examples of this Rosa type with all V’s (instead of U’s) in the obverse and reverse legends, three of which are struck in bath metal, two – as here – in copper.  Of which this is the only proof of the type, and the finest known by a proverbial country mile.

With lovely, original, hard, gem surfaces, choice chocolate brown color and some vibrant original mint red in the devices on the obverse and reverse.

Ex Stack’s May 2005 sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, lot #102 where it realized $48,875; earlier ex Bowers October 1980 sale of the Garrett Collection, part 3, lot #1240; earlier Col. James W. Ellsworth.
