Betts-24 variety, struck in Silver. 58.8mm.

An extremely rare and important medal struck by the Netherlands to celebrate the victory over the Spanish fleet at the Bay of Matanzas, Cuba in September of 1628.

Notably, the silver used to strike this piece was actually captured in that battle as described verbosely in the reverse Latin legend:

“The fleet of the Indies being cut off, and very rich booty taken without bloodshed, at the Bay of Cuba, now more celebrated by the loss of the Spaniards than formerly by their defeat, the chiefs of the United Provinces of the Netherlands have caused this medal to be struck from the captured silver, 1629.”

The piece itself is a lovely and original Choice AU with pretty golden and gray color.

Ex Stack’s January 2006 sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII, lot #681.

$16,500
