Noe-1, Salmon 1-A, W-690 variety, Pellets at Trunk, Large Planchet type. Considered to be Rarity-2.
An important coin and a lovely example of this type. This is also a famous coin, having been exhibited widely with the Eliasberg collection through the years and then prominently plated on the auction catalog cover (alongside the 1913 Liberty Nickel and the breathtaking 1793 Liberty Cap Cent) :
The coin itself is a wonderful, original silvery-gray, lustrous, with delicate shades of teal and golden orange toning.
This piece is also one of the largest on record, weighing 75.3 grains (and thus well above the standard of 72 grains), and impressively struck on an exceptionally broad flan.
Ex Bowers and Merena’s May 1996 sale of the Eliasberg Collection, as noted, lot #7.
$97,500
