Noe-16 variety, as noted, considered to be Rarity-2.
Not a terribly rare type, but almost never seen in the superb condition of this example.
An attractive rich blue-gray with some delicate golden toning on both the obverse and reverse.
Sharply and evenly struck, well centered on a lovely planchet and choice in every respect. This piece is also an early die state, without the noticeable breaks in the tree as seen on many examples.
Exceptional overall, as evidenced by its selection as the Wurtzbach, Noe and Breen plate coins to represent this type.
Ex Stack’s October 2005 sale of the John J. Ford Collection, Part XII, lot #109 @ $32,200; earlier F.C.C Boyd Collection; earlier T. James Clarke collection; earlier Wendell C. Foster collection; earlier Carl Wurtzbach collection and the Wurtzbach plate coin.
