Breen-260, W-11825 variety, struck at the Rouen mint. Estimated by us to be Rarity-6 or so as an issue, but more like R-7+ in this condition.
This 1721-B Rouen mint issue is perhaps 50 times rarer than the typical Rochelle ‘H’ mint coins normally seen.
Our research reveals just a handful of decent examples trading publicly in the last 25 years, including the 1983 Roper coin (which we sold several years ago), an inferior example in Stack’s 1988 Oechsner sale, a slightly more worn example in Stack’s 1976 Laird Park collection and a rough not-gradable piece just sold at Stack’s for $5,463.
Overall, the present example is the best, most original and unflawed one we’ve seen, or know about.
$7,500
