W-11840 variety, struck at the La Rochelle mint.
Here’s something we’ve never before offered.
A charming, original, golden brown and extremely mysterious 9 Deniers with three inexplicable capital R’s (seemingly of the same size and font as appears in FRANÇOISES) counterstamped on the obverse in a careful triangular arrangement. Two additional example of this same RRR counterstamped 9 Deniers are plated in Syd Martin’s newly published opus French Coinage Specifically for Colonial America, in which the author states "there could be some meaningful purpose to this particular countermarking – worthy of further research".
This example is also missing the typically seen H mintmark for La Rochelle beneath the date on the reverse, though it is not clear if it was intentionally struck that way, or it is absent in error (perhaps caused by a filled or damaged die).
Making this a neat and unusual piece the likes of which is unlikely to come this way (or any way) again anytime soon.
