Nelson 1, Breen-143, the one truly distinctive variety in the Redbook Hibernia series with a dramatic and unusual rock outcropping on the right side of the reverse (perhaps added by the engraver to conceal an error in the legend?).
With just a dozen or so specimens traced in all grades combined, this is a rare and important piece – and another coin which almost NEVER appears in dealer inventories.
The coin itself is a totally original rich brown with nice surfaces and just a few scattered lines, primarily in the right obverse field.
A materially better example – if such a coin could be located at all – would be significantly more expensive than this one.
Ex Bowers November 1988 sale of the Norweb Collection, lot #3424.
