Breen-310 variety, the ‘Le Chameau’ shipwreck type (though this specimen clearly never spent time under water).
A most unusual find.
This date and mint is described by Breen as ‘Extremely rare, one reported’. And while we have learned to take Breen’s pronouncements of rarity with a grain of salt, it is clear that this issue is far rarer than the typically seen dates of this type. In fact, it is the only one we can ever recall seeing.
Further, this date and mint is plated in Breen, and though the photo is dark, this could be the same coin pictured as some of the marks seem to match. Alas, we can’t be positive.
Rarity aside, this specimen is also a superb, stunning gem, and the finest graded (and only MS65 at PCGS) of this entire type.
Hmmm. Rarity AND Condition – that makes for a very, very interesting coin.
