Newman 23-R variety, and somewhat scarce as such for those who collect this coinage by die variety.
A very pretty, totally original piece with perhaps 50% mint red on the obverse and slightly more on the reverse.
Virginia Halfpennies are not rare in this condition per se, though finding an example like this that has never been dipped, or cleaned or enhanced in anyway is becoming harder by the day.
Ex Stack’s January, 2005 sale of the John J. Ford collection, lot #114. Earlier F.C.C. Boyd. Possibly the Newman plate reverse for this variety.
