W-1740 variety, Wreath Below Ship type.  Struck in Brass.

A lovely example pedigreed to Stack’s famous John L. Roper Collection where it was described as follows:

A magnificent specimen with exquisite detail.  Even the portholes on the small ships to the viewer’s left of the island are sharp and clear.  The usual dark olive color with perfect surfaces displaying original mint gloss.  A coin that will never need upgrading.  Uncirculated.

And that is notable, since the Roper sale is notorious for its extreeeeemely conservative grading throughout.
