W-1790 variety, Long Worm type. Considered to be Rarity-4.
An issue sufficiently distinctive and popular that it serves as the basis for the Early Bird logo on this very website.
Struck by Annapolis silversmith John Chalmers and featuring two birds fighting over a worm on the obverse while a snake waits ominously on the other side of a hedge, generally interpreted as a warning for the states to stop fighting amongst themselves while danger lurks nearby (likely in the form of England).
With clasped hands surrounded by J. CHALMERS, ANNAPOLIS on the reverse.
And this is much less common than the Short Worm type, especially so in the wonderful, choice, evenly struck, all original condition seen here.
