Crosby 3-C variety.

An exceptional piece noted as the highest graded in Rod Widok’s detailed census of this series.

The strike is crisp, the centering is perfect and the color is an attractive deep chocolate brown with some underlying blue tones.

Notably, the surfaces are proof-like on this example, a characteristic shared with only the Norweb specimen of this type.  Indeed, when offered in the 1920 Miller sale, this piece was called a "Proof", and described as "Undoubtedly the best known example".

Ex Bowers November 1979 sale of the Garrett Collection, Part 1, lot #610; earlier Thomas Elder’s May 1920 sale of the Henry C. Miller collection, as noted, lot #1621.
