Breen-1124, W-5635 variety, with the Inimica Tyrannis Americana obverse, and the Confederatio Small Circle reverse.  Considered to be Rarity-7-.

A rare and seldom seen issue in the colonial series.

This issue bears the distinctive image of Diana the Hunter (symbolic of freedom) trampling the English crown, surrounded by the legend INIMICA TYRANNIS AMERICANA (America Opposed to Tyranny).  The reverse mimics a sketch which appeared in the Papers of the Continental Congress depicting stars representing the original colonies with the legend CONFEDERATIO (Union) above and the 1785 date.

For whatever reason, most of the few surviving examples of this type have some impairment or other, with edge issues, stains, repairs, tooling and/or some level of surface pitting.

And while this one is not perfect, it does exhibit good detail, very appealing golden brown color and considerably less pitting than some of the other survivors. Awesome provenance, too.

Ex Stack’s November 1955 sale of the Farish Baldenhofer Collection, lot #44; earlier S.H. & H. Chapman’s June 1882 sale of the Charles I. Bushnell Collection, lot #882; earlier plated in Sylvester Crosby’s 1875 The Early Coins of America.
