Maris 16-J, W-4835 variety, Narrow Shield, Straight Plow Beam type. Considered to be Rarity-6-.

Starting this list with a bang we are pleased to present this rare and desirable chocolate brown XF NJ variety most often seen (when seen at all) in low grades with problems.

Indeed, this very coin was described in Stack’s May 1984 Bareford sale as “A variety always seen in the lower grades, making this example a great rarity for condition.“, while the more recent Siboni-Howes-Ish Magnus Opus “New Jersey State Coppers” ranks this piece 2nd finest extant in their census.

Ex Stack’s Bowers November 2019 E Pluribus Unum Collection of New Jersey Coppers, lot #6026 where it realized $15,600; earlier Stack’s May 1984 sale of the Harold Bareford Collection of New Jersey Coppers, lot #116; earlier ex Virgil Brand, earlier ex Dr. Thomas Hall Collection.
