Maris 24-Q variety, Narrow Shield Curved Plow Beam type. Considered to be Rarity-7+.

A major rarity in the NJ series with just 5 known, this variety is missing from many major collections (including the upcoming Partrick sale at Heritage).

And this is perhaps the most famous example, traced to the collection of Dr. Edward Maris and illustrated on the XL plate in his circa 1881 A HISTORIC SKETCH OF THE COINS OF NEW JERSEY as the Q reverse:

marisplate24-q

The piece itself is a nice, original light chocolate brown with a few nicks and bumps and some natural planchet fissures through the reverse shield which make it instantly identifiable as the Maris specimen.

Ex Stack’s November 2019 sale of the E Pluribus Unum Collection of New Jersey Coppers, lot #6066 where it realized $72,000 as PCGS F12; earlier Stack’s October 1984 sale of the Richard Picker Collection, lot #203; earlier in the Garrett Collection; earlier H.P. Smith’s June 1886 sale of the Dr. Edward Maris Collection, lot #398; earlier Maris Plate Coin, as noted.

$77,500
